Client
Wincanton is a leading supply chain partner for businesses across the United Kingdom (UK), employing over 20,000 people at 160 sites nationwide. With deep expertise in sustainable storage, handling, and distribution, Wincanton supports a range of sectors including eFulfillment, grocery and consumer, general merchandise, and public and industrial industries. The company plays a mission-critical role in helping British businesses move goods efficiently and safely.

Challenge
An internal review of incidents across the UK logistics sector revealed that 60% of accidents stemmed from three recurring categories: dropped trailers, cage falls, and red light pull-offs. Each of these incidents posed a serious safety risk to employees and threatened a significant financial impact to Wincanton’s operations.
Wincanton recognized the urgent need to develop new training that could deeply embed safe behaviors across its vast, distributed workforce. Any solution had to be engaging, realistic, and easily accessible to thousands of colleagues working across diverse sites, from warehouses to transportation hubs. Traditional training methods were unlikely to deliver the level of behavioral change required to meaningfully reduce risk.
Strategy & Solution
To meet this critical safety objective, Wincanton partnered with Video Interact and leveraged CenarioVR®, ELB Learning’s immersive virtual reality course builder, to create a groundbreaking training experience rooted in real-world scenarios.

The strategy focused on full immersion: drivers and warehouse staff would be placed inside realistic, interactive, 360-degree environments filmed on location at Wincanton sites. Rather than using actors, real Wincanton colleagues were featured in the training, heightening authenticity and creating relatable learning moments. Workers spotted hazards and analyzed behavioral missteps in scenes that reflected their actual work environments, making the lessons both practical and personal.

Each course targeted one of the three high-risk categories and was captured using a blend of 360-degree and conventional filming techniques. After filming, interactive elements were layered in using CenarioVR, including hazard spotting activities, drag-and-drop challenges, quizzes, and character situation analysis exercises. This multi-modal design created a reflective learning experience, encouraging learners to think critically about both environmental risks and habit-based behaviors.

Accessibility was key. The courses could be experienced individually on mobile devices, desktops, tablets, or virtual reality (VR) headsets, allowing learners to engage at their own pace. Wincanton also incorporated the training into group sessions and immersive rooms to expand reach. Recognizing the importance of consistency, Wincanton mandated the VR training for all colleagues associated with the three major risk categories.
Results & Impact
The impact of Wincanton’s immersive VR training initiative was swift and substantial. Within just 12 months of deployment, the company achieved a 58% reduction in dropped trailer incidents, a 71% reduction in red light incidents, and a 58% reduction in cage falls incidents.
Feedback from the workforce reinforced these quantitative gains: 80% of surveyed learners reported that their ability to spot and mitigate hazards had improved from “good” to “very good” after participating in the VR experience.
