Challenge
In 2023, Johnson & Johnson Vision introduced the ELITA™️ Femtosecond Laser System, a breakthrough in corneal refractive technology unveiled at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Meeting. The ELITA™️ system represents a generational leap in laser vision correction, designed to deliver exceptional precision, a smoother surgical experience, and outstanding outcomes for patients.
As Johnson & Johnson Vision prepared to bring ELITA™ to the global market, they faced the critical challenge of ensuring that their worldwide sales and marketing teams could master the system’s capabilities with both confidence and accuracy. The goal was not just to transfer knowledge, but to deliver an immersive, hands-on learning experience that would simulate real-world use and enhance understanding across diverse global audiences. The training had to be engaging, intuitive, culturally inclusive, and technologically sophisticated, matching the groundbreaking nature of the ELITA™ system itself.
Strategy & Solution
To meet this need, Johnson & Johnson Vision partnered with ELB Learning to design a cutting-edge, multimodal virtual training solution that could engage learners around the world.

The experience was built using CenarioVR®, ELB Learning’s powerful virtual reality course builder, creating an interactive 360-degree environment where learners could explore and operate the ELITA™ system in a highly realistic digital setting. The training incorporated a combination of instructional videos, 3D simulations, interactive animations, and gamified knowledge checks to ensure comprehensive understanding. Rather than a passive learning experience, users engaged directly with the ELITA™ interface through clickable hotspots, virtual tours, and procedural walkthroughs, allowing for experiential, hands-on learning without the need for a physical wet lab.

Content was designed with accessibility in mind, featuring an English VoiceOver and closed captioning translated into four additional languages—Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and French. A clean, intuitive course structure, streamlined navigation, and ELITA™-branded environments kept the experience cohesive and easy to follow across different learning preferences. Learners could access the training via the web, mobile devices, and most VR headsets, making the program versatile and easy to deploy globally.

Additional support materials—including job aids, study resources, and assessment tools—were integrated to reinforce retention and provide ongoing learning beyond the initial course. Gamification elements tracked learner progress and performance, adding a motivational layer to the experience and reinforcing key knowledge milestones.
Results & Impact
While metrics are still being collected as the course continues to be rolled out globally, early feedback confirms that the training experience is delivering on its ambitious objectives. Sales and marketing teams now have access to an immersive, hands-on training environment that accurately simulates the operation of the ELITA™ Femtosecond Laser System, enabling them to develop greater confidence and technical fluency.
From the actor-led introduction to the 3D virtual equipment tour, animated overviews, workflow videos, gamified assessments, and VR procedural simulation, every element of the program was designed to drive superior learning outcomes and ensure mastery of this next-generation technology.
